Custom Metadata

The OnSong® app has always let you specific metadata, or information about each song that helps you stay organized and manage your musical performances. However you can now use custom metadata tags and use those to browse and sort your songs.

Creating

To create custom metadata tags, you use the Song Editor. The OnSong® app uses either the OnSong® file format or the ChordPro file format to specify metadata or song information. This normally includes name/value pairs written as text separated by a colon. The ChordPro file format uses curly braces to contain each pair.

The OnSong® app recognizes a number of tags which are documented in the OnSong® Metadata and ChordPro Metadata. However, you can now specify your own tags. These are stored along with the song in a way that lets you browse and sort by those values. For instance, you could type Genre: Rock or year: 1964 to have OnSong organize your song by genre and year.

Browsing

Once you add custom metadata tags to your songs, they will appear in the Songs Menu Tags. There you will see the tag types you've entered. You can then tap on that type and view values you've entered which can be used to filter your songs.

Sorting

In addition to browsing, you can also use tags to sort. To do this, tap on the sort menu icon in the bottom left corner of the Songs List to access the Sorting Menu. Tags will appear in their own submenu which can be used to sort. OnSong identifies the datatype of tags and uses those methods to sort.

Displaying

Custom metadata tags do not display in the song viewer by default, but you can customize those in the Style Preferences MenuFormat Tab by customizing the Metadata format.
